Objective: To investigate the temporal pattern of the occurrence of pediatric intussusception and determine the correlation between the prevalence and meteorological factors in Chongqing. Methods: A retrospective review of patients from Chongqing diagnosed with intussusception from January 2008 to December 2015 at Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was performed.Patients were divided into different groups according to their age.Related climatic data consisting of air temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, wind velocity, sunshine duration and precipitation in Chongqing were collected.Chi-square fitting test and multiple linear regression were used to test the temporal pattern of the occurrence of intussusception and the correlation between meteorological factors and the prevalence of intussusception.Results:1.Incidences of intussusception in total children and infancy aging from 0 to 3 years old were mainly during spring and summer(P=0.000,P=0.000,P=0.000).The peak seasons of preschool children were spring and winter(P=0.000).There was no significant seasonal difference in the occurrence of school-age children.2.In general, intussusception occurrence was significant positively correlated with mean temperature, mean wind velocity, sum of sunshine and total precipitation per month(r=0.405,P=0.000;r=0.214,P=0.036;r=0.336,P=0.001;r=0.312,P=0.002),and negative impacted by mean air pressure and humidity per month(r=-0.490,P=0.000;r=-0.377,P=0.000).Stepwise regression analysis showed that only mean air pressure per month fitted into a linear model(R2=0.240,P=0.000).3.In babyhood children, intussusception occurrence was significant positively correlated with mean temperature, mean wind velocity, sum of sunshine and total precipitation per month(r=0.745,P=0.000;r=0.464,P=0.000;r=0.570,P=0.000;r=0.466,P=0.000),and negative impacted by mean air pressure and humidity per month(r=-0.784,P=0.000;r=-0.396,P=0.000).Stepwise regression analysis showed that only mean air pressure per month fitted into a linear model(R2=0.614,P=0.000).4.In early childhood children, intussusception occurrence was significant negative impacted by mean air humidity per month(r=-0.226,P=0.027).Stepwise regression analysis showed that mean air humidity, mean wind velocity and total precipitation per month fitted into a linear model(R2=0.164,P=0.001).5.In preschool children, intussusception occurrence was significant negative impacted by mean wind velocity per month(r=-0.213,P=0.037).Stepwise regression analysis showed that only mean air pressure per month fitted into a linear model(R2=0.224,P=0.000).6.In school age children, there was no significant correlation between the monthly occurrence of intussusception and six meteorological factors, and no meteorological factor fitted into a linear model. Conclusions: The incidence of acute pediatric intussusception in Chongqing showed certain seasonal and monthly periodicity, and there is a general correlation between the incidence and meteorological factors. The temporal pattern of the occurrence of intussusception and the correlation between the prevalence and meteorological factors varied in children from different age group.
