Kümmell's disease, also known as delayed post-traumatic vertebral collapse, intravertebral vacuum phenomenon, intravertebral vacuum cleft, intravertebral pseudoarthrosis and vertebral osteonecrosis,is a special type of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. It is first described by a German doctor Hermann Kümmell in 1895.Kümmell's disease is a clinical condition in which patients develop intractable pain and vertebral collapse in the lower thoracolumbar spinal region months to years after sustaining an otherwise asymptomatic minor spinal trauma. It may lead to spinal deformity and nerve damage without timely treatment.Although it was first described more than 100 years ago,the related literature research is still very little. The pathogenesis and treatment of Kümmell's disease need to be further researched. So we reviewed pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnostic criteria and treatment plan of Kümmell's disease.
