Backgroud:Hypoxemia is a conmmon complication in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease(COPD)patients, and it not only affects the physiological function of patients, but also has a serious impact on mental health and quality of life on them.Long-term home oxygen therapy can adjust hypoxemia, improve the prognosis and improve the quality of life. However, the current situation of long-term home oxygen therapy in COPD patients is worrying, and the interventions are more about giving knowledge, ignore the important role of belief. The Health Belief Model(HBM)can promote health behavior effectively. Objective:To evaluate the effect of interventions based on the HBM in improving the long-term home oxygen therapy belief and behavior in patients with COPD.Methods:This was a quasi-experimental study.A total of 78 COPD patients were recruited from August 2016 to April 2017 in the inpatient department of two general hospitals in Beijing by convenience sampling method.Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the ward they belong to or the time they were recruited.Patients in the intervention group received HBM based intervention, meanwhile, they were provided a handbook of long-term home oxygen therapy and received long-term home oxygen therapy skills showed by the researcher.Patients in control group received routine education, they only received explanations of the handbooks by the reseacher. All participants completed pretest measures and were reassessed immdiately after the intervention, one and three months post-intervention separately.Results:75 patients(38 from the intervention group,37 from the control group)were observed three months post-intervention.Results showed that long-term home oxygen therapy belief,long-term home oxygen therapy behavior and average daily oxygen inhaling time of the intervention group were significantly improved compared with the baseline(P<0.008)and those of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions:Interventions based on HBM can effectively improve long-term home oxygen therapy belief and long-term home oxygen therapy behavior in patients with COPD.
