Objective: To investigate the relationship between bone mineral density and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged and elderly men. Methods: A total 940 middle-aged and elderly men in The Fangchenggang Area Male Healthy and Examination Survey were enrolled in this study. We collect blood pressure, waist circumference, weight, height, blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and blood lipids and other biochemical indicators, and questionnaire survey. According to the metabolic syndrome diagnostic criteria of the Asian population in the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2005, we divided into the metabolic syndrome group and the non metabolic syndrome group. The calcaneal bone mineral density was measured by calcaneal ultrasound bone densitometer. Results: metabolic syndrome groups had higher waist circumference,BMI,triglyceride, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin than the non metabolic syndrome group (P < 0.05). The high density lipoprotein is lower in metabolic syndrome group (P < 0.05). The metabolic syndrome group had higher calcaneal stiffness index, T value,After adjusted for BMI, the difference was still statistically significant. Correlation analysis showed that waist circumference?BMI was positively correlated with calcaneal stiffness index, T value(P < 0.05).Conclusion: The middle-aged and elderly men with metabolic syndrome have higher ultrasonic bone mineral. Keeping a certain BMIand waist circumference may have a protective effect on bone density.
