Objectives:Tumors have become a severe threat to human health in recent years.Statistics show the incidence rates of most types of tumors are rising to different degrees.About 1/4 of tumor-caused deaths occur in China.Thus,humans are faced with a new challenge of tumor prevention and control.The therapeutic techniques and methods for tumor treatment in modern medicine have been improved increasingly,and the major methods include surgery combined with radiotherapy or chemotherapy.However,despite the ability to improve remission rate,traditional Western medicine will cause severe side effects and drug resistance.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCD),as a major part of traditional medicine,can be combined with Western medicine for tumor treatment based on syndrome differentiation.Such combination is superior in improving therapeutic effects and relieving adverse reactions.In this study,we built an anti-tumor TCM database based on data collection,and thereby used mathematical models to search for anti-tumor TCM with function effectiveness and modern pharmacological trials.The findings will theoretically underlie the clinical medication based on anti-tumor TCM and Chinese medicine&Western medicine comprehensive treatment.Methods:Chinese herbs were searched for according to Chinese Materia Medica and Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2015.Based on the anti-tumor traditional Chinese herbs newly added into Modern Pharmacology and Clinical Application of Chinese Traditional Medicine,we updated and screened the anticancer functions about these herbs publicized between 2006 and 2016 on China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)and thereby built an anti-tumor TCM database.Data mining was conducted on SPSS after data standardization.Then the frequencies of the collected data were statistically analyzed.By the classical Apriori algorithm with modification,we successfully found a mining algorithm with two-way strong association rules through programing.This algorithm was used to mine the relationships among natures,efficacy and functions of these Chinese herbs.Results:(1)An anti-tumor CTM database was built.Totally 1378 Chinese herbs from relevant sources were collected.The pharmacological data of their anti-tumor functions were updated and would facilitate researchers with searching in the future.(2)The anti-tumor Chinese herbs identified here are mostly cold natured(?32%),bitter-tasted(?35%),passing through liver channel(?24%)and non-toxic(?85%).(3)The frequent efficacies of the anti-tumor Chinese herbs include detoxification,pain relief,detumescence&heat-clearing&detoxification&blood promotion,and blood stasis removal.(4)The frequent functions include anti-tumor,anti-pathogenic microorganisms,anti-inflammation,and immunoregulation.(5)Four two-way strong association rules were identified from analysis of nature-efficacy-function.?Nature-nature associations rules are between:cold nature and bitter taste;bitter taste and liver channel,sweet taste and spleen channel;cold nature and liver channel,cold nature and heart channel;warm nature,pungent taste and liver channel;neutral nature,sweet taste and spleen channel.? Nature-efficacy association rules are between:cold nature and efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification,cold nature and efficacy of heat-clearing;bitter taste and efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification;liver channel and efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification;cold nature,bitter taste,liver channel and efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification.?Efficacy-function association rules are between:efficacy of detoxification and function of anti-pathogenic microorganism.? Nature-efficacy-function association rules are between:neutral nature,pungent taste,liver channel,anti-tumor efficacy and function of immunoregulation;cold nature,bitter taste,heart channel,efficacy of promoting circulation&removing stasis,and function of expanding coronary vessels.Conclusions:(1)Our frequency statistics about nature,efficacy and functions of these anti-tumor herbs accord with the theories of TCM.Namely,the anti-tumor drugs are mostly cold-natured,bitter taste and passing liver channel.The common efficacies are detoxification&detumescence,heat-clearing&detoxification,and circulation promotion&stasis removal.The frequent functions include anti-tumor,anti-pathogenic microorganisms,anti-inflammation,and immunoregulation.(2)The efficacy-function association analysis of anti-tumor Chinese drugs uncovers the following strong two-way rules:neutral nature,pungent taste,liver channel,or anti-tumor with immunoregulation;warm nature,sweet taste,liver channel,or detoxification with anti-pathogenic microorganism;warm nature,pungent taste,lung channel or gas-clearing with pain relief;cold nature,bitter taste,liver channel,or heat-clearing with anti-pathogenic microorganism;cold nature,bitter taste,heart channel,or circulation promoting&stasis removing with coronary vessel expansion.(3)The association rules identified by data mining with the help of Apriori algorithm show that for anti-tumor treatment by TCM,prescriptions and combinations,we recommend doctors to select drugs with neutral nature,pungent taste,passing the liver channel,with the efficacy of anti-tumor,and with the functions of immunoregulation.(4)Classification rules of function combination and efficacy show that the efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification is significantly associated with the anti-pathogenic or anti-tumor function.Together with nature-efficacy cross table,we think the possible reason is that the drugs with the efficacy of heat-clearing&detoxification are mostly bitter-or cold-natured,and that bitter-or cold-natured drugs contain active ingredients for tumor treatment.
