Objective:Understanding related factors associated with stroke are important for preventing and lowering its incidence. This research investigates and identifies various factors related to the incidence of ischemic stroke. It further examines the relation between these related factors and syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),such as Wind,Heat,Damp and Phlegm,Blood stasis,Qi deficiency, and Yin deficiency.Object and Method:The incidence of ischemic stroke was investigated from January 1,2016 to December 31,2016 at the inpatient neurology department of Jiangsu Province Hospital in Nanjing,China.Of the total cases,50 cases of first time strokes and 50 cases of recurrent strokes were randomly selected to determine factors related to their incidences.Cases of recurrent strokes were further analyzed to find the relation between the related factors and TCM syndromes.Results:1.In 2016,there were a total of 411 cases of ischemic stroke registered at the inpatient neurology department of Jiangsu Province Hospital. There were 200 cases of first time strokes(current group),and 211 cases of recurrent strokes(recurrence group). Two people from recurrence group passed away. There were more male patients(65.2%)than female patients(34.8%).Age was a significant risk factor(P<0.01).There were more patients over the age of 75 in the recurrence group compared to the current group.Autumn was also associated with higher incidence of ischemic stroke, especially among the recurrence group.2.The most common symptoms were difficulty walking(89.1%),difficulty speaking(47.4%),and one-sided numbness(32.1%).Comparing the two groups, decreased anamnesis was more common in the recurrence group(P<0.05),while mouth deviation and vision problems were more common in the current group(P<0.05).3.The most common TCM syndrome was wind-phlegm stasis(71.5%).Syndromes of Qi deficiency and Blood stasis were more common for the recurrence group compared to the current group(P<0.05).4.White matter lesions and abnormal blood HCY were more common in the recurrence group(P<0.05).5.For 47%of all cases, the cause of illness was undetermined.Undetermined cause of illness was more common for current group(P<0.01).Intense was a more common cause of illness for recurrence group(P<0.05).6.Family history of cerebrovascular disease was a significant risk factor(P<0.05),especially among the recurrence group.7.Life habits:bad sleep quality was more common for current group(P<0.01).Furthermore for more than 50%of all cases, the following habits were present:smoking, excessive drinking, high consumption of salty or faty fried food, lack of exercise, and irreggular check up of blood pressure among high blood pressure patients. Therefore, these habits were in close relationship with stroke.8.Cannot answer what is risk factors of stroke was more common for current group(P<0.01).After leave hospital and someday has stroke omen, recurrence group choose immediately go to hospital was more than current group(P<0.01).9.TCM syndrome and risk factors relationship:Heat syndrome and Yin deficiency syndrome were more prevalent in the current group compared to the recurrence group(P<0.05).Within the recurrence group,Blood stasis syndrome was more prevalent in females(62.5%)compared to males(37.5%).Wind syndrome was more prevalent among patients with high systolic blood pressure(68%)compared to those with normal systolic blood pressure(32%).Damp and Phlegm syndrome was more prevalent among patients with abnormal blood HCY compared to normal blood HCY(P<0.05).Heat syndrome was more prevalent in insomnia patients(52.9%)compared to non-insomnia patients(47.1%).This research found that incidence of ischemic stroke was high.Recurrent stroke was more common, and common symptoms were difficulty walking and difficulty speaking.Patients with prior medical history of ischemic stroke were more likely to suffer another stoke with more serious symptoms, even death in some cases. The following factors were associated with recurrent stroke:age over 75 years old, autumn, syndromes of Qi deficiency and Blood stasis, dementia, white matter lesions, abnormal blood HCY,intense, and family history of cerebrovascular disease.Based on comparison and analysis of the recurrence factors and TCM syndromes,Blood stasis syndrome was found to be more prevalent in females. In addition,Wind syndrome was more prevalent among patients with high systolic blood pressure.Damp and Phlegm syndrome was more prevalent among patients with abnormal blood HCY.Heat syndrome was more prevalent in patients with insomnia.
