Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an interactive game on the cognitive performance,ability of daily living,quality of life and depression among older people with dementia in China.Methods: A total of 38 older people with dementia were recruited and randomly allocated into an experimental group(n = 18)and a control group(n = 20),Both groups received routine care.The experimental group received an additional 8-week interactive game intervention using Xbox 360 Kinect.The Mini-mental State Examination(MMSE),Activity of Daily Living(Qo L-AD),Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease(Qo L-AD)and Cornell scale for depression in dementia(CSDD)and Observed Emotion Rating Scale(OERS)were used to measure the cognitive function,ability of daily living,quality of life,depression and emotional state with dementia before the intervention,at the 4th and 8th in both groups,the game score was recorded to assess if participants could follow the rules and play the game.Results:(1)Cognitive function.After 8-week intervention,the registration and language score of experimental group were higher than those of the control group and before intervention.The MMSE,attention and calculation score of the experimental group were higher than those at base line.The registration score of the control group has a significant decrease after 8-week intervention.Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the differences between the two groups in the main effect of intervention on the language score,in the main effect of time on the MMSE,registration and language score,in the main effects of intervention and time on the MMSE,registration and language score.The cognitive function of experimental group has improved,especially for registration,attention and calculation,language.(2)The ability of daily life.After 8-week intervention,the walking score of the experimental group was decreased,which was statistically significantly lower than those of the control group.Compared with ADL,IADL,PSMS,walking and washing score of the experimental group at base line,there was a significant decrease after 8-week intervention.Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the differences between the two groups in the main effects of intervention and time on the ADL,PSMS,walking and washing score.The ability of daily life of experimental group has improved,especially walking.(3)Quality of life.After 8-week intervention,the mood,friends,ability to do things for fun and Qo L-AD score of experimental group were higher than those of the control group.The Qo L-AD,the mood and memory score of the experimental group have a significant increase after 8 weeks compared with that at base line.Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the differences between the two groups in the main effect of intervention on the friends score,in the main effect of time on the Qo L-AD score,in the main effects of intervention and time on the Qo L-AD,mood,memory,ability to do things for fun score.The quality of life of experimental group has improved,especially for mood,memory,friends and ability to do things for fun.(4)Depression.After 8-week intervention,the CSDD,mood-related signs,behavioral disturbance,cyclic functions and ideational disturbance score of experimental group were decreased.The behavioral disturbance score of the experimental group has a significant decrease after 8-week intervention with that at base line.Depression detection rate of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group.Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the differences between the two groups in the main effect of intervention on the score of mood-related signs,in the main effect of time on the score of CSDD and mood-related signs,in the main effects of intervention and time on the score of mood-related signs,behavioral disturbance and ideational disturbance.The depression of experimental group has improved,especially for mood-related signs,behavioral disturbance,cyclic functions and ideational disturbance.(5)Emotional state.During the game intervention,the score of pleasure of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group,the score of anger and sadness were lower than those of the control group.(6)Game score.As the game intervention progresses,the game score of experimental group has improved.Participants could follow the rules and play the game.Conclusions: Interactive game as a means of intervention for older people with dementia in daily rehabilitation nursing can improve the cognitive function,ability of daily living,quality of life and depression symptoms among.
