Objectives:(1)To find out happiness and related influence factors of the elderly lived in pension agencies, Fujian, and then lay the foundation for the later clinical study conducted in elderly patients with dementia.(2) To revise the Subscales of the Functional Assessment of Communication Skills, to rate its validity and reliability.(3)To evaluate the effect of Time Slips project to improve the cognitive ability, communication skills, emotional state, quality of life and alleviate the symptoms of depression of elderly patients with dementia.Methods:(1) Convenience sampling was employed. 421 cases of elderly were investigated from 38 pension agencies in Fujian. The researcher collected their basic information and the MUNSH information, and then explained the factors that impacted the elderly happiness.(2) Translated the SFACS into Chinese. Delphi Method was conducted to revise the scale. The researcher collected the SFACS data of 128 elderly patients with dementia. The validity and reliability of the scale were tested.(3) Quasi-experimental study was employed. One hundred cases of elderly patients with dementia were recruited, and then divided into two groups. A total of 91 cases completed the study, 43 cases in test group and 48 cases in control group. Patients in both groups received conventional care. The test group received the Time Slips intervention, and the control group received the Social Contact intervention. Both kinds of intervention lasted for 6 weeks. We collected the data of MMSE, CSDD, SFACS, QOL-AD in week 0, week 7, week 10 and evaluated the effect of intervention.Results:(1) The average score of subjective well-being was 34.19±12.38. The results of the single factor analysis showed that family relationship, disposition, hobbies, participating in activities held by agency, sports activities, recreational activities were influence factors of subjective well-being.(2)The Chinese version of SFACS consisted of 2 dimensions with 21 specific items. The content validity index of the scale was 0.91. Two common factors were extracted by the principal components extraction analysis and the cumulative contribution rate was 30.922%、22.119% respectively. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.930, the retest reliability was 0.839 and the interrater reliability correlation coefficient was 0.606 for the scale.(3) The results of repeated-measures analysis of variance indicated that: ①The scores of MMSE language skills in the test group were higher than the control group(7.53>5.92, P<0.001). ②The scores of CSDD in the test group were lower(2.97<4.46, P<0.05). ③The scores of SFACS social communication in the test group were higher(6.22>5.88, P<0.05). ④There was no significant difference in the scores of QOL-AD between groups. Mann-Whitney U test showed that the scores of OERS pleasure and general alertness in the test group were higher than the control group.Conclusions:(1) The level of subjective-well being among elderly in the pension agencies of Fujian is relatively high. The influence factors are Family relationship, disposition, hobbies, participating in activities held by agency, sports activities and recreational activities.(2) The revised SFACS shows acceptable reliability and validity. It could be used to evaluate the communication ability for dementia patients in China.(3) The Time Slips can alleviate dementia patient’s depression and improve their communication ability and emotional state. The scores of the cognitive ability and quality of life show a trend of rising, but do not reach statistical significant level.
