Objective: This study is designed to explore the interaction between coping style and anxiety-depression in hospital employees. Methods: The hospital employees, who were working at the 1stAffiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, were randomly invited to answer questionnaires anonymously.Besides individual characteristics, the questionnaires included self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS),and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ).131 and 231 valid questionnaires were collected from doctors and nurses(recovery rate 65.50% and 90.23%),respectively.Results : The incidence rate of anxiety and depression were 51.08%(n=118)and48.05%(n=111)in the nurses, and were 35.88%(n=47)and 45.00%(n=59)in the doctors, respectively. The rough SAS scores existed significant difference between doctors and nurses(t=2.254,P=0.025),but not the rough SDS scores(t=1.104,P=0.270).Neither the active coping style scores(ACS),nor the passive coping style scores(PCS)existed significant difference between doctors and nurses(P>0.05).In the employees without anxiety or depression symptoms, both ACS and PCS were significantly better than the general population(P<0.05),and those with symptoms were not better than the general population(P>0.05).Among the nurses,in the stepwise regression against SAS or SDS,both ACS and PCS were significant influence factors, and were protective and risk factors, respectively. The same results were also found among the doctors. On the other hand,in the stepwise regression against ACS or PCS,higher ACS scores were frequently found in the employees with lower SDS scores;while higher PCS scores were in those with higher SAS scores.Additionally, refered to other departments, employees of internal medicine and surgery department couldactively cope with pressure, and the coping strategy of those who worked for long times were relatively passive. Conclusion: The incidence rates for anxiety and depression is obviously higher in nurses than in doctors. There is significant difference between hospital employees with and without anxiety-depression symptoms.Anxiety-depression and coping style tightly correlated to each other.
