Objective: To evaluate the effect of utilization of a standardized pulmonary function training program on the incidence of postoperative respiratory failure of elderly patients with esophageal cancer. Methods: Eighty esophageal cancer cases aged 60 to 7.0 were collected at the Department of Thoracic Surgery, a hospital in Changchun from the year 2014 to 2015. 40 cases who had received routine nursing served as a control group, and the other 40 cases who had received routine nursing and additional standardized pulmonary function training from the 2nd day after admission to the 7th day postoperatively served as an observation group. The effect of standardized pulmonary function training was evaluated by comparing the incidence of pulmonary. complications including postoperative respiratory failure, length of ICU stay, chest tube retention time and length of postoperative hospital stay between the two groups. Results: Postoperative respiratory failure did not occur in the observation group while the incidence was 15% in the control group (P<0.05). The incidenceof pulmonary atelectasis was 10% in the observation group and 20% in the control group (P>0.05). The incidence of pneumonia was 5% in the observation group and 25% in the control group (P< 0.05).Length of ICU stay was 2.50±0.51d in the observation group and 4.45±4.92d in the control group (P<0.05). Chest tube retention time was 2.83±0.71d in the observation group and 5.58±5.95d in thecontrol group (P<0.05). Postoperative hospital stay was 14.18±2.58d in the observation group and 16.23±4.82d in the control group (P<0.05).Conclusion: The standardization of respiratory function training can improve the respiratory function in the old patients after esophageal resection, decrease the incidence rate of the respiratory complications, reduce chest tube retention timeand the length of stay in the intensive care unit(ICU) and in the hospital after operation. So carry out the standardization of respiratory function training to the old patients with esophageal cancer play a positive role on improving respiratory function and the effect of esophageal resection.
