Objective:To observe the different expectation of patient' on acupuncture treatment of perimenopausal syndrome.Design:This study is part of the study A Randomized Controlled Trial of Acupuncture for Treating Perimenopausal Syndrome, and the 103 patients were chosen under blind method. 103 Acupuncture group participants were divided into high expectation group and low expectation group according to the different expectation. The therapeutic method of the two groups were acupuncture and auricular-plaster therapy. The main points of acupuncture are guanyuan, zusanli, sanyinjiao and zigong point. The auricular points, heart, liver, kidney, endocrine, shenmen were singled out. All the participants received acupuncture 3 sessions per week in the first 4 weeks and 2 per week in the following 8 weeks, for a total 28 sessions over 12 weeks. Auricular points were plastered by Semen Vaccariae twice per week for consecutive 12 weeks, both ears alternatively applyed. Acupuncture expectations were measured at baseline. The Main outcome indicators was Menopause Rating Scale (MRS), the secondary outcome indicators were Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL), average hot flash score during 24-hour. All the outcome indicators were assessed at baseline and the 4th,12th,16th,24th and 36th week.Results:1.This trial was well completed and the characteristics of two groups were comparable in baseline(P>0.05). There were no differences between reproductive endocrinology group, physical group and mental group in Menopause Rating Scale(MRS) in the high expectation group and low expectation group (P>0.05), but had a difference(P=0.05) in baseline. There were no differences among physical group, mental group and vasodilatation group in Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL)(P>0.05) in the high expectation group and low expectation group, but reproductive endocrinology group had a difference(P<0.05) in baseline. There were no statistically significant in reproductive endocrinology group between high expectation group and low expectation group, so covariance test was not needed, too. The average hot flash score during 24-hour also had no statistically significant (P>0.05)in two groups in baseline. Baseline is balanced, the high expectation group and low expectation group could be compared.2. The results of study indicated preliminarily that The three symptom groups of Menopause Rating Scale(MRS) witnin high expectation group and low expectation group had no significant difference(P<0.05) between pretherapy and post-treatment, pretherapy and the fourth week, the twelfth week and follow-up period. The four symptom groups of Menopause Rating Scale(MENQOL) and average hot flash score during 24-hour witnin high expectation group and low expectation group were the same as MRS.3. The results of study indicated preliminarily that the improvement of three symptom groups of Menopause Rating Scale(MRS) between high expectation group and low expectation group had no significant difference on the fourth, twelfth, sixteenth, twenty fourth and thirty sixth week(P>0.05). The improvement of reproductive endocrinology group, mental group and vasodilatation group of Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MENQOL) between high expectation group and low expectation group had no significant difference on the fourth, twelfth, sixteenth, twenty-fourth and thirty sixth week (P>0.05), but the physical group had differences among the twelfth, sixteenth, twenty-fourth week(P<0.05). The improvement of the average hot flash score during 24-hour between high expectation group and low expectation group had no significant difference on the fourth, twelfth, sixteenth, twenty fourth and thirty sixth week(P>0.05).Coclusions:1. Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of perimenopausal syndrome, improving symptoms and patients'quality of life.2.The high-low expectation has no significant influence in acupuncture treatment of most perimenopausal syndrome, but may have influence on the painful symptoms of perimenopausal syndrome.
