Objective To research and analyze comprehensively the changes of blood indices(Hb,MCV and SF)and the percentages of three kinds of iron content of long-term fixed apheresis platelet donors, which provides some new experimental data for further researching and more detailed and better Health examination criteria of apheresis platelet donors, meantime, and offers some reference for advocating and recruiting of donors. Methods This study involves in 109 male and 74 female samples from long-term fixed apheresis platelet donors in the period from June to August in 2014,which donate apheresis platelet more than 5 times in Beng Bu Blood Center.Taking into account the differences between male and female donors in normal levels of Hb,MCV and SF,this study aimed to reveal changes of Hb,MCV and SF of male and female long-term fixed apheresis platelet donors and overall investigation of iron storages of them from the ages, the total times of donating platelets, the total units of donating platelets and the interval period relative to the lastest donation respectively.Results(1)Samples of male donors: 1)Samples were divided into two groups(26-40 years old group and 41-55 years old group)according to the ages;there was not statistically significant difference between the two groups in Hb,MCV,SF and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05).2)They were divided into three groups(9-30 times group,31-50 times group and more than 51 times group)according to the total times of donating platelets;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV,SF and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05).3)They were divided into three groups(10-45 units group,46-80 units group and more than 81 units group)according to the total units of donating platelets;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV,SF and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05).4)They were divided into three groups(more than 22 days group,17-21 days group and 14-16 days group)according to the interval period relative to the lastest donation;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05),but was statistically significant difference between them in the average concentration of SF(P<0.05).(2)Samples of female donors: 1)Samples were divided into two groups(26-40 years old group and 41-45 years old group)according to the ages;there was not statistically significant difference between the two groups in Hb,MCV,SF and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05).2)They were divided into three groups(9-25 times group,26-45 times group and more than 46 times group)according to the total times of donating platelets;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV,SF,the percentages of iron deficiency and critical range of iron content(P>0.05),but was statistically significant difference between them in the percentages of iron sufficiency(P<0.05);the percentages of iron deficiency in 9-25 times group,26-45 times group and more than 46 times group were 57.15%,29.17%,27.27% respectively.3)They were divided into three groups(10-45 units group,46-80 units group and more than 81 units group)according to the total units of donating platelets;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV,SF and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05).4)They were divided into three groups(more than 22 days group,16-21 days group and 14-15 days group)according to the interval period relative to the lastest donation;there was not statistically significant difference between the three groups in Hb,MCV and the percentages of three kinds of iron content(P>0.05),but was statistically significant difference between them in the average concentration of SF(P<0.05).Conclusion MCV and Hb can not reflect overall the iron storage of apheresis platelet donors, but SF is a good blood indicator for screening it.Long-term fixed apheresis platelet donation would not lead to significant changes in the levels of MCV and Hb,and would not lead to iatrogenic iron deficiency of blood donors. However, blood collection agencies should pay attention to the iron storage of female blood donors for the total times of donating platelets more than 46 times and all blood donors for the average period of less than 21 days in a year, and also measurement of serum ferritin will be recommend before they have donated apheresis platelet.
