From Incomplete Condition To Remodeling:The Lived Experience Of Patients With Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignances in women, recently, the incidence rate increases and the age of onset in our country showed younger trend. As an illness that connects body, self and social, the changes that breast cancer bring to women's body spread to family and social levels and bring profound influence in women's life.Under the direction of the sociology of body and symbolic interaction theory, this study used qualitative research method to study the lived experience of patients with breast cancer from the framework of body destruction, body contradiction, body remodeling and the dimension of mind and body, time, space and relationship. Information was collected through participatory observation and in-depth interview from 28 patients. The study found that during the period of body destruction, feeling the abnormal of body and the incomplete of the body as well as the hopelessness and low self-efficacy are the main physical and mental experience of patients with breast cancer; in the period of body contradiction, patients with breast cancer experienced bitter and sweets in space aspect and fickleness of human's nature in interpersonal relationship aspect; as for body remodeling period, positive body practice in physical and mental, space and time aspect which brought a sense of integrality are the main lived experience of patients with breast cancer. The lived experience of patients with breast cancer demonstrated the dual nature of body and disease, patients had both positive and negative lived experience during the destruction of body and the active body practice. Personal agency, interpersonal relationship and culture are the crucial factors that influenced lived experience of patients with breast cancer.Finally, in order to provide patients with effective and pertinent service, the study presented service idea and suggestion for medical social work's intervention from different period based on the lived experience study.
