Objectives To study the effect of perceived control intervention on the cancer related fatigue, quality of life, level of mental health and skin reaction in breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Methods The 200 breast cancer patients who received radiotherapy in Radiation Therapy Center of Tangshan People’s hospital from Nov. 2014 to Oct. 2015 were enrolled in the study. They were divided into two groups according to their order undergoing the first radiation therapy: odd number patients were enrolled into the control group and even number patients were enrolled into the intervention group. Patients in both two groups were given conventional nursing. The patients in intervention group were given perceived control intervention for 1.5 months, including cognitive control intervention, information control intervention and behavioral control intervention. Patients in both two groups were evaluated with general information questionnaire, MFI-20, FACT-B, SCL-90 and reaction rating scale of the skin before and after intervention. All the data were analyzed with SPSS 20.0 statistical description software. Results 1 General information: There were 100 cases in each group. The age range of the intervention group is between 27 and 78 years(50.04±11.11). The age range of the control group is between 31 and 71 years(52.61±8.70). There was no significant difference in the age of the two group of patients(P>0.05), as well as the profession and the degree of education. 2 Comparison of cancer related fatigue in two groups: Before control intervention, there was no significant statistic differences between the two groups in total score of CRF, resultant fatigue, physical fatigue, less activity, powered lowering and mental fatigue, respectively(P>0.05). After 1.5 months of intervention, the scores of CRF and each dimension of intervention group were all significantly chanced than those of the control group(P<0.05). 3 Comparison of quality of life between the two groups: Before control intervention, there was no significant statistic differences between the two groups in FACT-B total score, physiological status, social/family condition, emotion situation, function status and additional attention, respectively(P>0.05). After 1.5 months of intervention, FACT-B total score and each dimension score of intervention group were markedly chanced than those of the control group(P<0.05). 4 Comparison of life qualitybetween the two groups: Before control intervention, there was no significant statistic differences between the two groups in SCL-90 total score, somatization, force, interpersonal relationship, melancholy, hostility, anxiety, terror, bigotry and the other factor, respectively(P>0.05). After intervention, no significant improvements were found in terror and psychoticism aspects of the intervention group patients compared with those of control group patients(P>0.05). There were significant improvements in the other dimension scores of the intervention group patients compared with those of control group patients(P<0.05). 5 Comparison of skin reactions between two groups: The skin reaction was divided into 0- IV levels. After intervention, there were 5 cases appeared level 0, 73 cases appeared level I, 18 cases appeared level II, 4 cases appeared level III and 0 cases appeared level IV skin reactions in the intervention group; There were 3 cases appeared level 0, 50 cases appeared level I, 33 cases appeared level II, 14 cases appeared level III and 0 cases appeared level IV in the control group. The radiation skin reactions of the intervention group patients were significantly lower than the control group patients(P<0.05).Conclusions 1 Perceived control intervention could relieve cancer related fatigue in the breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. 2 Perceived control intervention could improve life quality and level of mental health of the breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. 3 Perceived control intervention could reduce skin reaction in the breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.
