Objectives To explore the syndrome distribution and medication characteristics of hypertension, analyze the association of them and provide valuable references for clinical diagnosis and treatments, by studying the syndrome distribution and medication characteristics of hypertension literatures of recent 11 years. Methods 212 clinical papers about syndrome and medication of hypertension were selected from 2004 to 2014, the papers were divided into headache part, dizziness part, headache accompanied with dizziness part and integral part depending on their contents. Established database and Input the name, category, year, amount, syndrome, prescription and ingredient of the papers which meet the inclusion criteria. Made statistical analysis of the four parts respectively. Syndromes was analyzed by frequency analysis. Frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis and cluster analysis, were applied for medication. Then analyzed the relation and distinction of the four parts according to the theory of TCM. Finally, explored the relationship between medication and syndrome of hypertension through integral analysis. Results 1 Distribution of syndromes: Top 5 frequency distribution of cases were selected: syndromes of headache were liver-yang hyperactivity syndrome, blood stasis syndrome, yin deficiency syndrome and yang excess syndrome, liver-fire hyperactivity syndrome and excessive phlegm dampness syndrome; syndromes of dizziness were excessive phlegm dampness syndrome, complication of liver yang and excessive phlegm dampness syndrome, qi stagnation & blood stasis syndrome, liver and kidney yin deficiency syndrome; syndromes of dizziness accompanied headache are: liver-yang hyperactivity syndrome, yin deficiency and yang excess syndrome, excessive phlegm and dampness syndrome, yin deficiency of liver and kidney syndrome and liver-fire hyperactivity syndrome; Syndromes of integral part are : liver yang syndrome, yin deficiency and yang excess syndrome, excessive phlegm dampness syndrome, liver and kidney yin deficiency syndrome, liver-fire hyperactivity syndrome. 2 medication characteristics of hypertension: 1) The top 10 most frequently used drugs of headache parts included licorice root, rhizome of Sichuan lovage, gastrodia elate, uncaria, Chinese angelica root, twotooth achyranthes root, radix paeoniae alba, radix rehmanniae, chrysanthemum and haliotis. The top 10 most frequently used herbs of dizziness parts included: gastrodia elata, tuckahoe, licorice root, uncaria, twotooth achyranthes root, pinellia tuber, atractylodes, rhizoma alismatis, radix paeoniae alba and haliotis. The top 10 most frequently used herbs of headache accompanied with dizziness part included: gastrodia elata, uncaria, twotooth achyranthes root, radix paeoniae alba, poria cocos, chrysanthemum, radix rehmanniae, haliotis, eucommia bark, licorice root. The top 10 most frequently used herbs of integral parts included: gastrodia elata, uncaria, twotooth achyranthes root, tuckahoe, licorice root, radix paeoniae alba, haliotis, chrysanthemum, atractylodes and pinellia tuber. The top 3 most frequently used drug category of the four parts included: tonic drugs, drugs calming liver to stop endogenous wind and drugs clearing heat. 2) Common-factor, based to the exploratory factor analysis, carried out cluster analysis to obtain the ordered plot clustering. Seven clustering, four clustering medicine group, the three drugs and a common medicine, clustering acquired in the end, of each the substance were as follows: C1: mulberry parasitism, eucommia bark, radix polygoni multiflori cane, haliotis, achyranthes, gardenia, uncaria, gastrodia elata; C2: dogwood, yam, cooked rehmannia, wolfberry fruit and cortexmoutan; C3: this decoction, atractylodes, tuckahoe, alisma; C4: radix paeoniae rubra, rhizoma ligustici wallichii, peach kernel, safflower, C5: gentiana scabra bge, radix scutellariae, gardenia, radix bupleuri, angelica, radix paeoniae alba; C6: angelica, astragalus, licorice. G1: selfheal, chrysanthemum, uncaria, earthworm. G2: radix bupleuri, radix scutellariae, salvia miltiorrhiza and rhizoma chuanxiong. G3: radix rehmanniae, radix scrophulariae, radix puerariae, tortoise shell. G4: radix rehmanniae, chrysanthemum, puerarin, selfheal. S1: keel, oysters. S2: semen zizyphi spinosae, licorice root. S3: semen zizyphi spinosae, astragalus root. A commonly used medicine: radix paeoniae alba. Conclusions 1 Syndromes distribution: The syndrome most frequently occurred is the deficiency syndrome(49.02%), the symptoms intermingled deficiency and excess were 19.07%, frequency of pure deficiency syndrome is the smallest(15.50%). 2 Medication characteristics: the frequency of usage of tonic drugs(1377), drugs for calming liver to stop endogenous wind(939), drugs clearing heat(768) and drugs for invigorating blood circulation and eliminating stasis(653) were mostly in the treatment of hypertension. 3 Relationship: C1: Tianma Gouteng decoction- liver-yang hyperactivity syndrome or yin deficiency hand, C2: Zuogui decoction- liver and kidney yin deficiency syndrome, C3: Banxiabaizhutianma broth- excessive phlegm dampness syndrome, C4: Taohongsiwu broth- blood stasis syndrome, C5: Longdanxiegan broth- liver-fire hyperactivity syndrome, C6: Dangguihuangqi broth –two deficiency of qi and blood compatibility syndrome; C7: Siwuxiaoyao powder – liver blood deficiency, phlegm and blood stasis syndrome; G1:- complication of liver Yang and blood stasis syndrome, G2:- complication of liver-qi stagnation and blood stasis syndrome, G3:- yin deficiency syndrome and yang excess syndrome, G4:- liver-fire hyperactivity syndrome; D1 is suitable for the liver-yang hyperactivity syndrome, in addition, D2, D3 is suitable for the two deficiency of qi and blood compatibility syndrome. radix paeoniae alba is suitable for yin deficiency syndrome and yang excess syndrome and two deficiency of qi and blood compatibility syndrome.
