Objective: To investigate the prevalence of cataract, surgical coverage rate and the bilateral cataract blindness burden among adults aged 50 or above in Jiangning blocks, Jing'an district in Shanghai, for the purpose of evaluating the cataract status and the efficacy of the prevention blindness program.Methods: The prevalence and influencing factors of cataract in aimed residents were investigated during November 2012 to February 2013 with cluster sampling. A questionnaire including the general information, past medical history and prevalence of eyes and the fundamental inspections which consists of daily life vision, corrected vision, slip lamp, indirect ophthalmoscope and OCT were performed.Results: 2478 individuals were examined and the prevalence of cataract was 28.77%. when the bilateral presenting vision <0.1 was defined as the blindness criterion, the cataract surgical coverage rate was 78.46%, between in female and illiteracy was 74.42% and 66.67% respectively. The cataract blindness burden was 3.18%, it was 3.78% and 5.88% between in female and illiteracy respectively.Conclusions: the prevalence of cataract was increasing by aging. The cataract, especially the late period cataract, leads to severe vision impairment. cataract is a serious public health problem and the elimination of cataract blindness is still the first important task in blindness prevention.
