Background: Since the senile dementia became the “fourth killer” for elderly, it brings lots of burden on both family members and the society. MCI was now considered as a key phase for dementia treatment. The study was aimed to find out the proportion and characteristics of MCI among inpatients in neurology department by running a cognition screening, arousing the attention of cognition impairment and setting up a foundation for dementia awareness and intervention. Methods: 294 inpatients in neurology department of Shenzhen People's Hospital went through cognition screening and relative examination during May 2015 to December 2015. The study statistically analyzed the MCI proportion, risk factors and its relationship with different diseases, compare the difference of cognition impairment between different diseases. Results: The overall MCI proportion was 59.18%, no clear difference was seen between different genders, but there was statistic difference between diverse diseases. Education was considered a protective factor for MCI [OR=0.66(0.49-0.87)], while high Hb A1 C level [OR=1.65(1.14-2.39)] and high homocysteine level [OR=1.09(1.02-1.17)] were more like two risk factors. Cognition impairment can be seen in all cognition fields in vascular MCI patients, and the orientation function remained relatively intact in BPPV group, somatization disorder group and other disease group. In Parkinson's disease group, MCI patients' score on delayed memory had no statistic difference from those with normal cognition level. Conclusions: The proportion of MCI in elderly with neurological disease was so high that doctors and nurses should pay more attention to the cognition changes. Hb A1 C and homocysteine were two independent risk factors for MCI. Mo CA could help discover characteristics of cognition impairment to assist doctors quickly identify the underlying causes for MCI.
