Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term clinical effect of total hip arthroplasty therapy on patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Methods:Follow up from November 2012 to June 2015, 31 patients(40 hips) with ankylosing spondylitis were treated with hip prosthesis replacement. The Harris hip rating score system was used to evaluate the clinical results including allomeric function?pain and total range of motion, besides, carefully record the related complications.Result:The majority of patients can walk without pain by himself, however, there were two sufferers sustaining pain. The Harris hip rating scores of post-operation and total range of motion separately improved(59.35±10.37)?(59.53±37.48)°comparing to preoperation,in the patients who had bone ankylosis, the average arc of flexion achieved was(58.32±15.31)°?For the patients who had restriction of outdoor walking, their activity enhanced by a wide margin. There was only one case of suffering from heterotopic ossification(Brooker I) in the follow-up process,in addition, there was no complications such as infection ? prosthesis dislocation ?prosthesis loosening etc and patients who required overhaul. Conclusion:The short-term clinical outcomes of total hip arthroplasty therapy which can reduce pain, correct malformations and improve function on ankylosing spondylitis are ideal. The longer outcomes need to be confirmed through further investigation.
