Objective:To investigate the relationship between pharyngeal airway MRI measurements and the monitoring index of PSG of patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and normal subjects. The difference of pharyngeal airway MRI measurements between patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and normal subjects were also researched. Then the value of pharyngeal airway MRI measurements of OSAHS patients and normal subjects in wake situation in predicting the monitoring index of PSG were assessed.Methods:37 OSAHS patients diagnosed by PSG were brought into patient groups and 18 nonsnoring normal subjects confirmed by PSG were brought into normal groups. The neck circumference, the height and the weight of the subjects were also measured. The cross-sectional areas, anteropterosterior diameter and left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region, retroglottal region and epiglottal regions in transverse plane scan of patient groups and normal group subjects were measured. The axial plus coronal scanning were also performed to measure the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue and posterior pharyngeal wall. Then the length of the tongue, the length and thickness of the soft palate and the cross-sectional areas of the soft palate on midsagittal planes were also calculated. Then data analysis were carried out to find out significant correlations between MRI measurements and the monitoring index of PSG of patients and normal subjects (the apnea hypopnea index, AHI; the apnea index, AI; the hypopnea index, HI;respiratory disturbance index, RDI;the lowest oxygen saturation, LSaO2;the oxygen desaturation index, ODI).Results:? There were correlation between the BMI, neck circumference and AHI, ODI, LSaO2 of all the subjects.? The correlation between cross-sectional areas and left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue, the length of the tongue, the cross-sectional areas of the soft palate on midsagittal planes and the AHI, LSaO2, ODI of all the subjects were found (P<0.05).? The intensity of positive correlation btween the left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region and AHI of all the subjects is the most strong, the negative correlation btween the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue and AHI of all the subjects is strongest. The cross-sectional areas of the soft palate on midsagittal planes has highest correlation with LSaO2 and ODI.? The correlation between the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue, the length of the tongue, the length of the soft palate and the LSaO2 and ODI of patients with OSAHS were found (P<0.05).? The cross-sectional areas and left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region, the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue, the length of the tongue, the length of the soft palate of the OSAHS patients were also different with those of the normal subjects (P<0.05)Conclusion:? There were correlation between the BMI, neck circumference and PSG parameters of all the subjects.? The correlation between cross-sectional areas and left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue, the length of the tongue, the cross-sectional areas of the soft palate on midsagittal planes and the PSG parameters of all the subjects were found.? The left-right diameter in the narrowest retropalatal region the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue should be valued in the treatment of OSAHS. The soft palate should be valued in the subjects whose oxygen pressure decreased obviously.? The correlation between the thickness of pharyngeal lateral tissue, the length of the tongue, the length of the soft palate and the LSaO2 and ODI of patients with OSAHS were found.? The main obstructive location planes of the OSAHS patients were at the retropalatal region, the retroglottal region were less. There were one more obstructive location planes in the airway of some OSAHS patients.
