Objective: To explore the effect of group painting therapy for the compassion fatigue of nurses, providing a scientific, effective and feasible method for reducing and relieving the nurses' compassion fatigue.Method: Forty-eight nurses, selected from a grade-A tertiary hospital of Cangzhou, were divided into experimental group(n=24) and control group(n=24) randomly. There is no significant difference in the age, degree of education and compassion fatigue between the two groups. Group painting therapy was conducted in the experimental group once a week, 90 minutes every time, 8 times in total and lasting 2 months, while the control group received no psychological counseling. Feedback of the effect was assessed and instant interview was conducted at the end of the intervention and there will be a 3-month follow-up and interview after the intervention completed. The Professional Quality of Life(Pro QOL) scale,Ego-Resilience Scale(ERS) and Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS) were used to assess the effectiveness for compassion fatigue before and after the intervention. Results: The quantitative study shows that the Pro QOL, ERS and PSSS scoring difference of nurses in the control group has no statistical significance before and after the intervention, while of nurses in the experimental group has statistical significance, and the difference after the intervention is obviously superior to that before the intervention. It favors the experimental group with significant increase at the scores of Pro QOL, ERS and PSSS after intervention, while there is no significant difference at the scores in the control group.Qualitative study shows that painting therapy can release the individual's passive emotion safely and relieve the nurses' compassion fatigue. It is an effective way to manage and improve nurse's ego-resilience and personality growth. Painting therapy can create a safe, warm and credible team atmosphere and provide social support for individuals. Conclusion: The group painting therapy is beneficial to relieve nurses' compassion fatigue.
