Objective:To observe the clinical effect and safety of toxin-eliminating and itch-relieving therapy in treating skin pruritus induced by chronic renal failure (CRF skin pruritus) and to fully display advantages of Chinese medicine in its treatment through the exploration of the functional mechanisms for the further researches. Methods:The selected patients of CRF skin pruritus according with the test standards were randomized into control and treatment groups. Besides the initial treatment administered to the patients in control group, the cases in treatment group were given the Modified JieDu ZhiYang Decoction (the modified decoction of eliminating pathogenic factors and stopping itching), with 4 weeks course. The following factors of patients in two groups were observed and recorded before and after treatment, namely the extent of itching, scratch, skin dryness, pruritus impact upon patients'diet and sleep as well as experimental results like hepatic and renal functions, blood and urine routine examinations, quantitative tests of 24h urinary protein, electrolytes, blood lipids and bowel movements. The evaluations of comprehensive clinical effects and safety were conducted through the systematic analysis of the obtained data. Results:In the treatment group with 14 patients, no case recovered,2 cases were markedly effective (14.29%),10 cases effective (71.43%),2 cases had no effect (14.29%) and the total effective rate was 86.71%, while in the 14 cases of control group, no case recovered and was markedly effective,4 were effective (25.00%),12 had no effect (75.00%) and the total effective rate was 25.00%. The chi-square test showed that the comparison between the two groups had the statistical meaning (P<0.05) and the treatment group was superior to the control group. The indexes of blood and urine routine examinations, hepatic and renal functions, electrolytes, quantitative tests of 24h urinary protein, etc. of patients in both groups did not abnormally elevate before and after treatment. Meanwhile, the cases in both groups did not show any negative change during and after the therapies.Conclusions:(1) The therapy of eliminating the pathogenic factors and stopping itching can effectively relieve the symptoms of skin itch induced by CRF skin pruritus (syndrome of wind, dampness, liquid stasis and toxin accumulation). (2) The research indicates that the therapy is safe and reliable in treating CRF skin pruritus (syndrome of wind, dampness, liquid stasis and toxin accumulation).
