In order to identify the optimum ways of removing the field inapplicability and fresh leaves, the direct-viewing analysis, variance analysis and comprehensive evaluation way of orthogonal experiment design method were employed to study the influence of different number and period of removing the field inapplicability and fresh leaves on growth, physical properties, chemical components and economic character of flue-cured tobacco. The results as follows:(1) There were no-significant difference of plant height, stem thickness and pitch among different treats, but the difference of maximum leaf length and maximum leaf width were significant. The plant height and pitch decreased with the delaying time of removing the field inapplicability and fresh leaves.(2) The number of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for leaf length with leaf width proportion, thickness of leaf balance water ratio and weight per unit leaf area; the number of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for the weight per leaf and stem ratio, followed by the period of removing the lower leaves and the number of removing the top leaves.(3) The number and period of removing the top leaves was the key factor for nicotine, sugar/nicotine and nitrogen/nicotine of flue-cured tobacco; the period of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for reducing sugar of flue-cured tobacco; the number of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for potassium/chlorine of flue-cured tobacco.(4) The number of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for fine tobacco ratio, mean price and yield, followed by the number of removing the top leaves; the number of removing the lower leaves was the key factor for output value, followed by the period of removing the lower leaves.(5) The optimal ways of removing the field inapplicability and fresh leaves in Shaoyang was removing 2 lower tobacco leaves at the time of tobacco topping and removing 1 top tobacco leaves at the time of the first roast from the bottom.
