The cam mechanism is made up of cam, follower and rack. The cam is a member with curvilinear profile so the complex movement can be achiev ed and it is widely used in various mechanical structures. The design of cam mechanism mainly includes the determination of the motion rules of the follower and the design of the cam contour curve. The key of design is the contour curve. The traditional methods of design are drawing method and analyzing method. However, the traditional design methods are inefficient and complicated. It can't even meet the design requirements of high speed and precision cam. With the development of computer aided design and manufacturing technology(CAD/CAM)computer aided design is an effective way to help engineers and technicians accomplish their design tasks. In the design process of cam mechanism, computer aided design technology can greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of design. It is impossible to find a unified form to deal with the needs in design for a wide variety of cam mechanisms. The auxiliary means that can satisfy various types of cam mechanism design have not yet appeared. In this paper, the CAD method of cam profile curve is taken as the research aim.The design idea and method of developing cam mechanism parametric design system based on Lab VIEW programming language are put forward. And a universal cam parametric design system for all kinds of cam mec hanisms is designed in this paper.Through practical examples, the practical application of the design system in cam mechanism design is expounded and the running result of the example shows that the universal cam parametric design system runs well. This method can effectively improve the efficiency and accuracy of cam contour curve design.
