"Japanese Gardening" and "Japanese Gardener" are the unique concepts of Japanese landscape architecture."Japanese Gardening",in purpose of mocking up the highly idealized nature, belongs to the category of Japanese traditional cultural activities. The beginning of Japanese gardening can be traced back to 1700 years ago, which is ancient Japan, and its history is like Japanese history, can be divided to five period:ancient period, classical period, medieval period, early modern period, and modern period. In modern period and after,Japanese gardens have been shocked in the context of modernization.Kojima Saichi was an active Japanese gardener in the last century, who lives during 1926-1989,which is in Showa era.At his time,European style garden was popular in Japan, although Japanese garden or Japanese styled garden were losing their popularity. As a Japanese gardener who was trained traditionally,Kojima Saichi was well versed in the design and making techniques of traditional Japanese gardens, and he also made innovations in garden creation.Eventually Kojima Saichi form its own style,"Kojima Style".Kojima Saichi’s two most recognized works are Kawada Residence Garden and the Moss Garden of Adachi Museum.Kawada Residence Garden was built in 1961,in which the use of garden elements is considered a subversion of the tradition of Japanese garden architecture. However, its overall feeling is still in "Japanese garden style".The Moss Garden of Adachi Museum began construction in 1972.Despite the details where some of classical Japanese garden’s traits have been observed, the overall feeling of it is "picturesque".This paper traces the origins of Japanese Gardens, and in the background of the Japanese Garden, taking Kawada Residence Garden and the Moss Garden of Adachi Museum as specific cases, attempt to compare the similarities and differences between Kojima Saichi’s approach of work and traditional Japanese garden creation, giving a profile of Japanese garden creation in the modem context. |
