Study On Chinese Ancient Wooden Structure Mortise Types And Jinling Da Baoen Temple Pavilion Mortise Application

Tenon-Mortise is the major interconnection method of wooden components,allowed several scattered wooden members fit together into a whole structure.As the processing of components is the foundation procedure of the woodworking technique,the investigation of tenon-related process is also be the basis of the study of technical history.This thesis closely related to the keyword "mortise type",started from two angles:one is collation of literature,aims to build the overall cognition about mortise types,the other is field investigation,summed up each type of mortise’s function in a whole structure.The first chapter focuses on the history of mortise,pointed out that totally 28 mortise types have been appeared,and the earliest mortise application can be traced back to the Hemudu Site in the year 5000BC.This part take the component combination angle as the classification method,explore all kinds of tenon’s shape,history,application with examples and illustrations.Coincides with the Nanjing Da Baoen Temple Pavilion reconstruction of the occasion,it is a rare opportunity to observe the craft of the mortise and the whole process of fitting.The second chapter based on the first-hand information through mapping the scattered wooden components in construction site,divided Pavilion’s mortise into 11 types,then maintained a strict one-to-one correlation between type and cross-angle and the location of wooden members in structure.The application of Pavilion’s mortise is compounded,it represents three characteristics:Ming Dynasty wooden building structure Jiangnan regional tradition,modernity.Thus the last chapter based on the above,from the Da Baoen Temple Pavilion case,discussed the impact of various factors,to explore the tenon’s inheritance and development.The first part is the summary of the type from literature,however,partial material easily bring the shortcomings of information fragmentation.Thus,in the case of a variety of mortise application principles,the second part focuses on the Pavilion case study,detailed dismantling its building structure,tried to give a brief account of mortise application in structure.The last part analysis all the influence factors in Pavilion,in one hand can deepen our understanding of the construction process to the current level of awareness,in the other hand maybe can provide some clues that potentially help the cognition of complexity of mortise applied in structure.
