As the most important mode of transport in international trade,maritime transport accounts for 90%of the total volume of international trade and transportation,of which dry bulk shipping plays an important part of international shipping.After the 2008 financial tsunami,the slowdown in global economic growth hindered the recovery of shipping demand.The sharp increase in new capacity led to intensified competition in theindustry.The continuous rise in fuel prices intensified the pressure on operating costs.Various factors from the economy,society and industry co-squeeze the profits of shippi ng companies.Harsh business environment for shipping companies ability to make busi ness and decision-making poses a huge challenge,but also enable shipping companies t o realize that scientific and rational management methods to improve business efficienc y and reduce operating costs is essential.Speed optimization is a major part of ship oper ation decision-making and an important decision-making often encountered in the practi ce of dry bulk shipping.As shipping companies are experiencing intensified market co mpetition and fierce fluctuations in freight rates at this stage,the market environment is complicated and volatile.On the other hand,they face the situation of high oil prices an d rising fuel costs.How to choose the optimal operation speed strategy in different mark et stages and balance the relationship between the market opportunity cost and the sailin g value has become a challenge for every shipping company.In this paper,a set of scient ifically feasible methods for determining and calculating the optimal operating speed is established combining with the current situation of the dry bulk market.This paper firstl y illustrates the necessity of optimizing the speed of dry bulk carriers by introducing the downturn of the shipping market and the rising oil prices.And then it studies the relate d theories of the definition,mode,characteristic,cost,income,sailing economy of dry b ulk shipping.Then,the author summarizes the physical meaning of dry bulk carrier desi gn speed,economic speed and profit speed,applicable market environment and related c alculation method.Finally,taking Huadong coal transportation route as an example,this paper analyzes the corresponding optimal operation speed in different market environm ents in 2016,and forms the method of distinguishing the market environment-determin ing the speed calculation method-the calculation method for making the optimal operat ion of speed according to the freight rate and the fuel price.
