The global development benefits the economy.However,the traditional handicraft industry is on the decline in many countries.As a result,many factories have been abandoned.The demolition of the old handicraft factories in the city will bring a lot of problems.The demolition not only consumes manpower and material,but also has a negative influence on the environment and society.Therefore,another way to deal with these old factories should be taken into consideration——reform.More and more examples of reformation of the old factories bring inspirations to the designers.At the same time,these reformations promote the development of the city and the economy.The abandoned factories have gained new lives.This research studied about the reformation of the abandoned factories through the literatures and field research with the method of comparative research.The reformation of the old handicraft factories into the multifunctional spaces for culture and creative industries is the focus of this research.The example of Tengchong Lotus Sugar Factory is the object of this research.The local folk custom culture and traditional handicraft combined with the element of modern industry makes the feature of the reformed space.The reformation in Tengchong benefits various industries around.Compare with the cost for demolishing the factory,less money and materials were used to reform it.The designer adapted the new space for culture and creative industries to the local culture of the Dai nationality.This is an operable example for the reformation of abandoned factories in areas inhabited by the minority nationalities.
