In order to further promote overall planning of urban and rural areas, the countryside of Shanghai is progressively developed into a new rural area with native cultural characteristics.Development of cultural soft strength and cultural centers has been listed in the “13th Five-Year Plan” as an important project for meeting in an all-round way the demands for livelihood under the new normal conditions in Qingpu District.Through an analysis of the environmental conditions of Dianshan Lake No.1 Village,a public building in the village—the workshop of a small-sized enterprise engaging in processing business,is selected for implementation of the project. It is intended to turn the place into a cultural integrated structure with cultural, commercial and administrative functions, through design remolding and optimization of space planning. It is hoped that through the construction of the virtual integrated cultural facility—a project just in an embryonic form, may serve as a pacesetter for the development of cultural undertakings in the future,so as to allow them to be imbued with new concept as viewed from the historical and cultural aspects.Meanwhile, the effort to fan out from point to area and the development of cultural undertakings may give an impetus to the growth of local tourism and economy, making it possible for the area around Dianshan Lake No.1 Village to become in the future a new village with living-industry-tourism integrated functions.Proceeding with the three aspects, namely, public participation, low energy consumption and local emotion in mind, work is made on the following aspects: analysis of the conditions that can be used of for the design work;study on the workable design methods and tactics;comparison of the activities of the public and extent of activities in different spaces;and summing up the conditions under which the inhabitants are allowed to participate in the space design work.Through incorporating inclusive design, renewal design and low-tech design, the broad of masses of the villagers can be mobilized to have a hand in the construction and development of villages,so as to take into account and respect the local tradition, customary practice and demands, make full use of the design elements that can be gathered in the locality and explore the cultures with local features. To develop and popularize a practical strategy that can effectively instruct the villagers to improve their environment has become a trend for realizing coordinated and fair development of urban and rural areas and new-type villages. In the villages in the future, because of the link-up of urban and rural areas, the countryside will present the features of the new times with local traditional history and an ecological environment.
