Public hydrophilic space design is originally intended to optimize urban environment and provide such an area for citizens to take a natural rest.With the advancing of time,people have developed a more profound understanding in designing and planning the river areas.This has been proven by increasing attention and focus not only on land development,land utilization and function orientation,but also transportation system and other constructions along the river banks.As a global aging trend develops,we shall,in developing the economy,consider how the urban area could be developed to serve an ageing population.Moreover,as old people often feel difficult to satisfy their spiritual comfort after retirement,they require an area that would be suitable for their activities.This study will offer a preliminary exploration into public waterfront space design in Guangzhou,from a perspective of old people.The article first introduces relevant current studies at home and abroad on waterfront space and senior citizens and analyzes senior citizens’ demand for urban public waterfront space based on their physical and psychological characteristics.It then elaborates on their daily activity characteristics and provides theoretical basis for the following investigation.The article applies questionnaires,the tracking method and the environmental behavior analysis method to analyze elderly-oriented design in Lai Chi Wan Chung,Guangzhou.The investigation proposes requirements on the area’s elderly-oriented living spaces from perspectives of health,comfort,safety,convenience and communication,and conducts the analytical research.The article finally proposes suggestions on improvements of elderly-oriented design for construction of urban public waterfront space in accordance with senior citizens’ use and demand for urban public waterfront space,and conducts in-depth studies in terms of humanization,safety and territory.This paper combines activity and psychological characteristics of senior citizens in urban waterfront space,conducts post-occupancy evaluation by studying senior citizens’ of in Lai Chi Wan Chung,sums up the region’s shortcomings in elderly-oriented design and finally proposes that recreational space should form diffusion space network based on pedestrian streets and strengthen connection among waterfront space,activity space and landscape and recreational space.Self-planting zones should be designed on squares to provide recreational amenities for senior citizens to slow down the decline of their physiological functions.
