Metro,being the most efficient public transport option,has become one of the key infrastructure construction projects across many Chinese cities.Metro plays twomajor roles: 1.to improve a city's transport system and support landscape redevelopment in its old town;2.to guide orderly expansion into a city's new towns in order to fuel the city's future growth.With further expansion of its metro network,a city is likely to observe strong economic progress,but along with certain impacts on the preservation of its old town and public areas.The common preservation measures include demolition and redevelopment,as well as reconstruction in another place.Whether to demolish and redevelop or to protect the landscape of its historic old town has becomea major topic in the metro station construction planning for stations around the historic area.In this research,the author looks into a few high-profile cases,which include the station construction cases of Yide Road Station on Line 6,Chan Clan Academy Station on Line 8 North Extension,Cultural Park Station and Hua Lin Temple Station,as well as station design cases in historic areas like Gong Yuan Qian Station,Beijing Road Station and Cultural Park Station.These cases will be analyzed from the following perspectives: historic zone preservation planning,metro network planning,location selection of metro station,metro construction,metro property development,public participation and city image.Various methodologies are applied in the analysis to study the relationship between the metro station construction and the urban landscape in historic city,including study on successful cases in other cities,fieldwork study,data analysis and journal referencing.This research focuses on the metro station construction in historic old town area.Comprehensive analysis is conducted on past cases of historic buildings demolition,repetitive stations construction,construction risks underestimation and incompatible station design with historic area theme.By this review,this research aims to complement the research area of metro construction in historic old town areain Guangzhou,and to showcase the latest learnings on harmonizing metro construction and the landscape style of old town preservation and redevelopment.Metro has become the framework for a city's future economic growth.To further improve transport system in the old town,more stations are likely to be built in that area.This research looks into social topics like new station selection and historic old town preservation planning,proposes suggestions on construction planning,station selection,construction best practices and station design.This provides a good reference to the future planning of new metro lines in Guangzhou.This research also provides good reference to the on-going metro construction projects,old town environment enhancement,historic landscape culture protection and cultural competitiveness improvement.This research focuses on the historic old town with an area of 20.39 square km,which is officially designated as Historic and Cultural Protection Zone of Guangzhou.Some discussions in this research may involve area outside of the Protection Zone.
