Wheel and axle are critical components relative to railway transportation reliability and safety. In which, design and manufacture qualities are bases to assure service reliability. But basic issues are there that existent code-based wheel design pays only attention on thermal mechanical strength and web fatigue strength for wagon wheel and axle design only on freesurface sections at the conversing sections of journal and wheelset. Lots of production wheel and axle failures are careless.Effort of present work focuses on summing up a frame work for railway wagon wheel-axle design strength and approval, which can well perform ability checks on anti-failures in production, developed by author's group. Key elements include in determination of design loads, construction on new finite element caculation methods, and approval methods on four kinds of academic wheel-axle failures. Capacities can be checked on anti-deformation of wheel tread, anti-major stressing fatigue damage of axle freedom sections nearby wheelseats and jounals, anti-multiaxial fatigue damage of wheel rim, web and gub and axle sections at bounds fitted with bearings, and anti-rolling fatigue sheeling of wheel tread and cracking from sub-surfaces of axle pieces fitted with wheels.Applications are carried out to wheel-axle of Chinese railway wagon with 25t axle weigh. The metioned capacities above have been well and fluently assessed with design loadsets. The code-based design assessments are also performed. Achievements have been well showed.The present work may promote design advantagement to provide a basis of assuring well design and manufacture qualities of railway wagon wheel-axles.
