The Application Of Appropriate Technology In Sichuan Aba Tibetan Rammed Earth Houses

As a part of architectural culture,the traditional residences have formed different building types in various regions through the influence of the different natural environment and the humanities after thousands of years of history, which reflect the local customs. On the basis of respecting the nature, the traditional architecture pursues the harmony between architecture and nature. With the the party’s policy of enriching the people,the rural economy has developed greatly,but the development of rammed earth dwellings are facing great difficulties.In this paper, I hope to improve the living standard of the residents by making use of the appropriate technologies without losing the locality.Firstly,this paper describes the natural environment,cultural background and social economic environment of Aba county.The author sums up the architectural features and difficulties of rammed earth dwellings in Aba.Secondly, this paper analyzes the environmental adaptabilities in traditional Rammed earth dwellings from geographical environment, climate environment and local building materials,which describes advantages of rammed earth dwellings in the construction of settlements space and buildings.Furthermore,this paper describes the development and renewal in construction of rammed earth dwellings in various periods.The changes in Tibetan rammed earth dwellings is following: 1) the changes of building layout; 2) the changes of architectural style caused by layout; 3) the changes in the elevation ; 4) from local building materials to modern building materials; 5) the use of renewable energy. These changes indicate that the development of appropriate technology in residential and a reexamination of living space.Finally, on the basis of the results of above researches, this paper takes a typical rammed earth dwellings for example to transform, from the aspects of interior space,windows, interior decoration to thermal insulation system.These measures can improve the indoor comfort and provide some suggestions for the construction of the rural residences.
