To apply the traditional Chinese architectural elements and infuse them into the city squares is the research focus and a great concern for Chinese landscape architects in their designing of city squares. The architecture of the Han Dynasty, which has become an important Chinese culture for its traditional craftsmanship and the unique style, bears typical oriental features.Through analysis of the architecture of the Han Dynasty, this paper explores and interpret the philosophical connotations of the architecture of the Han Dynasty for the purpose of creating new approaches and ways of thinking in designing. It also tries to expand the research scope of such architecture so as to arouse the public's interest in it and thus promote the historical Chinese architectural culture. This paper, based on the analysis of the architecture of the Han Dynasty, analyzes the visual features Together with its structure, space, color and design elements to arrive at the creation methods through examples. Then the complicated features of the architecture are simplified and rearranged in order to find out the ways in which the traditional elements and the modern city plazas can be integrated. Finally the paper explores the designing of “Hanfeng Square” in Xi'an to analyse its designing method and explores the ways in which to promote the intellectual significance inherent in the Han Dynasty architecture in designing, with the purpose of putting the old in to the new.It concludes that in designing modern city plazas, the cultural elements and the local cultural should be given priority so as to promote the cultural significance of the Tang Dynasty architecture and make it vital in the modern era.
