A Study On Historical Literature And Architectural Space Reconstruction Of The Fengyou Temple Area Located In Menxi,Nanjing

The south part of the old city is the root of Nanjing.Although the government of Nanjing started to realize the importance of protecting historic district,there still existed some problems in their work.Based on the analyzing of historical reference materials,including historical document,ancient maps,landscape painting of Ming and Qing Dynasty,aerial maps and cadaster,this paper summarized streets within the block.Furthermore,this paper recovered the special arrangement of Fengyou Temple,Xiawaguan Temple and Phoenix Platform via boundary analysis of the block.I tried to find a better way in urban planning and designing to protect the historical streets and traditional land texture.Firstly,by analyzing the maps of ancient time and Republic of China,I organized the primary historical structure of streets within the block.Then I compared the historical structure with new structure and recovered the historical streets.The recovered streets was basic framework of the whole block.Secondly,in order to verify the accuracy of the maps of ancient time and the era of Republic of China,I compared them with historical document.After that I obtained the full picture of the evolution of the block and displayed it through the timeline.Finally,I located the position of important historical space by examining literature,landscape painting of Ming and Qing Dynasty and GIS model.Thirdly,based on the location of important historical space,we compared Nanjing's satellite maps in 1929 with cadaster in 1936 and summarized the boundary of important historical space.The determination of the boundary was important for the block partition and land texture formation.Finally,I selected the old temples named Fengyou Temple and Xiawagun Temple in the block and recovered them.I leant basic space arrangement and distribution of Buddhist of these two temples back in Ming Dynasty via an old book named Jinling Vatican.Then I recovered their space arrangement through software like CAD and SU.I found that the filling of buildings was the refinement of block texture.The block texture could sustain traditional features if the filled buildings could coexist with the basic space framework.This paper contributes to the literature on both microscopic and macroscopic level.On the microscopic level,I first located the position of important historic interest,including Fengyou Temple,Waguan Temple and Phoenix Platform,by examining the historical materials.Then I recovered Fengyou Temple and Xiawaguan Temple via modern architectural techniques like CAD and SU.On the macroscopic level,I provided an effective idea in urban planning and designing based on historical research.The whole thesis contains about 46000 words,148 pictures and charts.
