Sigurd Lewerentz is the representative architect of 20th century in Sweden.During his seventy-year long career as an architect,Lewerentz had been through the romantic period, the neoclassical period, the modernist period and the modern revisionist period, encountering with diverse trends of ideologies, conducting exploratory practice and localized revision.Every new idea representing progressiveness and adaptivity were incorporated into his thinking system, which did not lead his work to complexity or blatancy, rather,a pure realm of austerity and introspection. The inherence expressed within his projects with greatly regional tectonic representation is the refined amalgam of modern technology, classical aesthetics, traditional culture and spiritual significance.Lewerentz's thinking demonstrates the regional dimension of "Scandinavianism"and the unique characteristics of his thinking,i.e.the concealing narrative containing oppositions. The thesis conducts research on these two dimensions, composed of three parts. The first part briefly introduces and reviews his personal experience and the trace of his thinking, with conclusion of the two characteristics mentioned above. The second part particularly studies the "Scandinavianism" of his thinking, unscrambling the developing background and process of which, and inductively analyzing his main approaches of interpretation. The third part analyzes characteristics of the concealing narrative containing oppositions, based on the conclusion of its forming conditions, with examples, inducing Lewerentz's methods of interpreting his thinking. This thesis reviews Lewerentz's thinking and its influence and effect based on the research aforementioned, and explores the inspiration given by his thinking on the architecture of Northern Europe and the author.
