With the rapid development of national economy and construction industry,large-span structural system has been widely utilized,which makes the selection of reasonable large-span roof structure system become an important step in the design procedure.Since the system selection have influence on all aspects of building construction,structural system comparison is an important step at the initial stage of building construction.Three different structural systems,namely grid structure,pipe truss structure,and string structure that have been used in large-span roof arena in the field,are compared considering design,construction,and other aspects of the economy.Using horizontal comparison method,both advantages and disadvantages of each system are compared through comprehensive analyses and comparison,which summarize current economic conditions and construction technical conditions.The recommended structural system is provided considering the applicability of long-span arena construction proposed.As a sophisticated system,the grid structure has been widely used in all kinds of buildings from the late 1980 s.With widespread application,pipe truss structure is developed based on grid structure,but has more advantages.String structure that belongs to a branch of pre-stressed steel structure is designed in the late 1990 s by the Steel Research Institute of Tianjin University in China.In recent years string structure has been utilized in field practical construction.It has more advantages with development potentiality and structural promotion ability,comparing to grid structure and pipe truss structure.String structure can adapt to roof structure with long span while decreasing horizontal bearing forces.It can benefit the lower part of the structure,and save the material consumption by the application of high-strength cables,which corresponds to the current tendency of the resource conservation policy.In the large span arena construction,string structure roof,compared to grid structure and pipe truss structure,is a preferred option with greater advantages under comprehensive analyses considering various factors.
