Rock Garden's Establishment In Beijing Based On Field Research

Western countries' rock gardens are widely focused for their rich plant species and alpine landscape.They have comparatively mature construction mode and steady view.Construction and application of rock garden in China,otherwise,is still in the primary stage.Being unclear of the origin of rock garden,confused by the concepts of rock garden and Chinese traditional rockery garden,a lack of rock plants resources are all the causes that hinder the development of rock gardens in China.This research is mainly based on the methods of literature review,field survey and construction practice,to find the possibility to build rock garden in Beijing and the selection of rock plants here.We first investigated the natural rock landscape,to summarize and describe the landscape elements(plant species,rock types)and the structure in rock landscapes to gain inspiration for rock gardens' building.Then,45 rock or alpine species were introduced and planted to explore their adaptation and using possibility in Beijing.Finally,based on the inspiration from field survey and results of introduction trial,a tiny rock garden was built.We lay emphasize on the materials' selection and key point for building to offer model significance for rock garden's development and to promote rock garden's application in cities.We draw conclusions as follows:1.Though investigations of several typical rock habitats in Beijing,Hebei province,Inner Mongolia and Jilin province,rock plant species,rock types and rock habitats,terrain and rock resources were analyzed and certain landscape types that can be imitated were confirmed.Such landscape types can be templated for natural rock garden and gravel slope.2.Though introduction of 28 plant species,we found that 16 rock plants growing in lower altitude such as Delphinium grandiflorum,Dracocephalum rupestre and Limonium bicolor adapted well in Beijing and can be used for rock gardens' construction directly;while 12 plants growing in higher altitude did not performed well in the introduction research and can only be used after experiments in biological characteristics.3.Based on the results mentioned above,a miniature rock garden was built,it has gorgeous landscape.Thus it has the value to be popularized and can be used in balcony garden and roof garden.
