Studies On Building Rock Garden And Selecting Rock Plants In Beijing Area

The idea of rock garden and the developing history of rock garden have been introduced. The present situation of rock gardens in China and in other western countries has been described. The difference between Chinese rockwork artificial hill and western rock gardens has been illustrated. It can be avoided mistake or trouble about concept of rock gardens. It offers various types of rock gardens and also offers plenty of selection of plants for rock gardens.This paper based on the literature and the fieldwork. The fieldwork was in Hundred Flowers Mountain, the suburban hill of Beijing. The natural rock plants landscape of Hundred Flowers Mountain was a representation of Beijing area. A small experimental rock garden that contains more than 100 kinds of plants has been built in Beijing Botany Garden, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.There were possibility and preference to build rock gardens in Beijing area. The condition of climate, soil and stone was suitable. Other consideration was many plants that could be choice in rock gardens designing. Another consideration for rock gardens designer was Chinese artistic viewpoint.
