Piston ring is one of the most important parts of the combustion engine,it has great influence on combustion engine's performance including the power,economy,reliability and environmental protection.How to reduce negative effects of the piston ring caused by lack of the performance is a big concern by researchers.Therefore,it is necessary to study the strength and heat conduction situation of the piston ring.Piston ring of a certain type of engine was taken as research object in this paper.Firstly,the stress of the piston ring in assembly process with piston was evaluated,then an independent program for stress testing was developed using Eclipse and ANSYS APDL language.Secondly,we discussed stress and deformation of the piston ring under cold conditions considering assembly load from cylinder liner and gas pressure load by the explosion gas in chamber.The stress and deformation of the piston ring was tested under these two differe nt loads separately first and,then,we calculated the stress and deformation of the piston ring considering both of these loads which allowed us to evaluated the influence of the two different loads clearly.Thirdly,based on an assembly model consisting of piston and a set of rings,temperature distribution,stress and deformation of the piston ring were calculated using coupling method considering both cold loads including assembly pressure,gas pressure and heat load from the combustion chamber of the engine.Finally,fatigue life of the piston ring considering both the heat and cold loads was predicted.The results showed: burst gas pressure had the minor effect on stress and deformation of the piston ring,heat load from the combustion chamber had more effect,the stress and deformation of the piston ring were mainly caused by assembly load from cylinder liner.From the result of fatigue life of piston ring considering both the heat and cold loads,it showed that this fatigue life design of the piston ring was acceptable.
