Competition in the international dry bulk shipping market is intense,under the depressed background of shipping industry,it is difficult for bulk carriers to make profit merely by carrying bulk cargo,many bulk carriers also carry general cargo like steel coils along with bulk cargo.When steel coils are stowed in the hold,the quantity to be loaded is usually calculated by Shadow Area Method,but this method can not be identified by all shipowners,and confliction between charterers and shipowners appears.Thus it is of great importance to verify the rationality of Shadow Area Method.This paper takes handymax bulk carrier as subject,model the ship in ANSYS based on the requirements of China Classification Society and output the stress graph of steel coil in different loading situation.Dynamic load is added to the boundary condition in order to simulate better.Calculate the number of steel coil tiers when the bottom structures reach strength limit by ANSYS,also calculate the number of steel coil tiers by Shadow Area Method,then contrast the two results to see if Shadow Area Method is a safe and rational method.Meanwhile,offer a proposal for the selection of bulk carrier to carry steel coils according to the stress condition of the bottom structures.This paper also models the situation of steel coil with and without dunnage,studys the stress on inner bottom and analyzes the effect of dunnage under steel coil.The final conclusion proves that Shadow Area Method is safe and rational,provides basis for handysize bulk carrier to carry steel coil,the conclusion is of practical values.
