With the rapid expansion of cities and acceleration of urbanization in China, there are approximately ten millions of people entering into the cities, which makes China’s newly-established buildings be equivalent to half of the entire world. The high speed of the cities’development brings boost to economy as well as environmental problems, among which water problems is one of those that require immediate solution. The surge of firm constructions and buildings lead to a substantial leap of the surface runoff in the cities, resulting in many environment problems such as flood and waterlogging in monsoon, deterioration of river system and water pollution.In order to resolve the water problems, many cities are making efforts to build the underground drainage pipelines and the underground drainage system so as to increase the flow of sewage. However, what cannot be apprehended is that although there are a series of measures taken, the water problems are not close to a radical resolve, the essential reason of which is that the environment system has lost the capability to self-clean and process due to unending exploitation, artificial interposition and lack of planning.At December 12,2013, the theory of Sponge City was put forward formally.After the part of cases’construction and application,the theoretical content aiming at the problem of water has the significant improvement and curative effect. Therefore, it got the attention and response of each city in the whole country,published related policies and technical indicators. A comprehensive theoretical study and practical exploration have also been introduced in the academic field. All aspects of urban planning and design began to develop rapidly toward the model of Sponge City.As a part of urban planning, residence community and its quantity is closely related to people’s life. And during the process of transformation, it is decisively vital to build sponge residence communities. According to the guidance of sponge city theory, it is supposed to comply with the sponge development of cities, planning the residence communities’ landscape areas in line with local conditions scientifically.The current study locates in the Changshui aviation residence community, Yunnan, Kunming, Guandu district. This residence community is a new modern one built under the traditional residence theory, as well as to coordinate with the regular operation of Changshui international airport. Under the background of sponge city development of Kunming, this study discusses the residence communities that occupy agricultural land, summarizes the sponge design theory, takes inquiry and analysis of the available site, sums up the sponge theory suitable for landscape design in the residence communities, applies that theory and design a new kind of sponge residence community, and finally seeks a theory system that can be applied to landscape design in the residence communities. Videlicet, this study aims at the materialization, specificity and refining of the sponge city theory, as well as the sponge theory suitable for landscape design.This study combines multiple subjects such as ecology, agriculture, landscape architecture, urban planning, etc., summarizes the concerned theories about sponge design, applies the theory to the design of Changshui aviation residence community, employs the methods of field trip, case analysis, and computer sketch, and in the end explores the methods and principles of the sponge design of Changshui aviation residence community.
