With the development of substations and grid technologies, substation secondary system changed from the original electromagnetic one into the microprocessor-based one. And it is entering a new stage that is digital and intelligent. Substation will achieve digitization in the whole process including the data collection, transmission and treatment. Consequently, the traditional method cannot satisfy the needs of today's digital substation technology development anymore. IEEE1588 precision Time Synchronization Protocol is a new-networked technical standard, which could fully meet the IEC61850 standard for digital substation time synchronization accuracy. With IEEE 1588 precision time synchronization protocol, automation systems and time synchronization system of digital substation networking can be combined for reducing the construction period and equipment investment, which would be an effective and feasible solution for solving digital substation time synchronization problems.This paper outlines the development of digital substation technology and timeline of synchronization technology. According to digital substation requirements and technical features, it introduces IEEE l588 time synchronization that could achieve sub-microsecond precision technology, followed by an emphasis on the IEEE l588 time synchronization. This paper will also conduct a comprehensive systematic analysis and research about the IEEE l588 time synchronization, the clock model, time stamp processing, master clock algorithm and other key technology of Synchronization principles. Moreover, this paper will analyze the feasibility of usage in digital substation technology based on the technical features of IEEE1588 and characteristics of digital substation technical IEEE1588 time synchronization system. Then it proposes a set of design about digital substation time synchronization system, applying to 110 k V Huadou substation. Finally, it tests the time synchronization system Huadou 110 kV substation.
