Research On Status Quo And Pragmatic Application Of Art Derivatives

The title of this graduation design project is "Research on status quo and pragmatic application of art derivatives". This design project consists of two parts,and the first one is redesign of author's original works of art, in order to bring the ideas and concepts in those pieces to everyday life scenario and transform them into art merchandise that can be collected and used by mass consumers. The second part is a collaborative design, in which author takes the lead and works with selected objects to design customized art derivatives based on certain artwork.There are two major sections in this dissertation and the first one contains outcome of the design, including art derivative design drafts, pictures during the process as well as the picture of final product.The second section elaborates the creation process of this design project, which can in turn be divided into four parts.Part 1. Market research report. Art derivatives is a relatively new market and it has been blooming rapidly. The current situation of both global and domestic art derivatives market is firstly investigated during the market research. The information on market size and industrial structure is presented, accompanied by analysis of several successful cases.The domestic art derivative market is relatively underdeveloped compared with global one, and the limiting factors are analyzed as well. A consumer questionnaire survey is also conducted for the topic of this design project. The result and analysis of this survey is presented in this part.Part 2. Literature review and theory study report. Articles including journals, reports and interview records are studied for a better understanding of art derivative. Firstly, the definition of art derivative is researched and clarified, base on which the author also investigated the historical reason behind the origination and growth of this specific business. Art derivatives are then categorized based on properties of different products. To understand the its value, art derivative is discussed from collectable, usable, social and economic perspectives. Finally, the design features of art derivatives are summarized as the base for subsequent design.Part 3. Design progress report. In practice, three problems are to be explored and tackled, namely, how to convey the idea of artists and artwork through art derivatives, can art derivatives help people understand artwork, how to connect art with actual persons and their life through art derivatives. The focus of redesign author's original works is to study the first two problems by looking into the message expressed by those works, providing that derivatives are to bring art back to life. The collaborative design practice targets the last question and the connection between a specific person and artwork. During the progress, author as the designer communicated with objects recursively and collected their opinion on the artwork as well as their needs, which helps producing satisfying outcome.Part 4. Summary on design and study. Understanding and unveiling the essence of artists and their works is a critical procedure of art derivative design. This requires the designer to have sufficient knowledge on art and excellent aesthetics. At the meantime, it is good practice to keep communicating with different customers and collect their needs.This in combination with persistent market research and creative design makes an effective working loop for art derivative design.In this dissertation, the relationship between art and life as well as connection between art and people is explored via reading and understanding other artists' artworks and author's original artwork. Attention is also paid to various opinions of different people on certain artworks and their specific needs.
