Research On Construction Methods And The Transformation Of Pingyao Traditional Buildings Based On Genius Loci

Since the loss of regionalism and genius loci has become a widespread issue at present in China,architects are trying to learn something from the traditional culture.Pingyao is the best well-protected historical city in China.It displays the traditional construction mode in ancient China.It reflects the traditional high-density city building wisdom with cultural blending,and has important significance to contemporary constructions.The author uses Pingyao as an example to summarize construction methods and contemporary transformation of traditional architecture,and aims to explore the methods of creating places in contemporary architecture design.The author collected lots of literatures of Pingyao traditional architecture through the methods of reading historical documents,field investigation,folk interviews and questionnaires.He analyzes this literature through the comparison,induction,training,and design experiment,combining the theory of architectural phenomenology.First,the paper discusses how the urban space,block space,courtyard space influence the orientation of place from the space perspective.Second,it discusses how the prototype of traditional buildings,ceilings and details influence the identity of place from the shape perspective.Third,it discusses how location,constructions and perception influence creating belonging to place from the material perspective.In addition,the author discusses the environment concept based on the three summarized construction methods and representative cases.Last,the author analyses and summarizes the methods of recent local architecture design in Jinzhong Region.Meanwhile,he choses a proposed site for architecture design in Pingyao to test the summarized methods.After that,he concludes the relationship between construction methods of traditional architecture and experience of the place,thinking how architecture,human and environment connect with each other.He also makes an expectation for contemporary architecture design.
