Currently, the automatic meter reading system has been widely used in water, electricity, gas and other national economy's industries. In the automatic meter reading system, different application scenes put forward different requirements for data collection protocol. The quality of the data collection protocol directly affects the efficiency and energy consumption level of the meter reading system. Therefore, the study for the automatic meter reading data collection protocol is very significant which is applied in specific application scenarios.In this paper, an energy efficient data collection protocol is researched and designed aiming at the specific requirements of the old water meter residential buildings reconstruction. The protocol is based on wireless sensor network and can balance the network load and extend the network lifetime. The main work is as follows:(1)The current automatic meter reading data collection protocol based on wireless sensor networks is researched and analyzed in depth. According to the application requirements of this article, we focus on the research and analysis of a dedicated data collection protocols meter automatic meter reading system-PEADG protocol. The energy consumption model?MAC layer protocol model?topology and the network operation process data collection phase were analyzed in depth. At last, the problems of this protocol was pointed out.(2)Based on the PEADG protocol research, a RR-PEADG protocol was designed. The RR-PEADG protocol was energy-efficient and had the characteristics of route repairing mechanism. Aiming at the phenomenon that data detour was exist in the topology constructed by PEADG protocol, the protocol given the detour algorithms based on the data shortest path. Data detour phenomenon was avoided in the data transmission process and energy were saved. A route repairing mechanism was given to update parent node. The blind use of PEADG protocol resources would result the imbalance of residual energyor even result the premature death of node. The mechanism solved the blind use of PEADG protocol resources. The network can automatically repair data transmission path without rebuilding the topology when the node energy is low or the node had a sudden failure.(3)PEADG and RR-PEADG simulation program were realized in Linux +QT programming environment and comparative simulation experiments were carried out. The experiment results showed that the RR-PEADG had better load-balancing network capacity and longer network lifetime compared to PEADG protocol.
