The taxi maneuver of fixed wing aircraft today is still not automated and there is a business case for developing advanced automation functions that depend on guidance and control systems to guide the aircraft on taxiways and runways. This paper investigates the use of the pure pursuit algorithm as the basis of aircraft control during taxi and proposes an adaptation for parameter calculating to the algorithm to reduce track error after analyzing the classic method. A fuzzy logic controller to adapt the look-ahead distance according to velocity and cross-track error is also proposed.Besides the traditional kinematic model, a virtual prototyping model of the tractor is also established to verify the adapted method as the elder one has been proposed for a long period without any advancement. The combined algorithm is evaluated on virtual path and simulation results with the two kinds of model indicate that the tractor follows the reference path precisely. Both fuzzy-logic controller and merging controller works well and the whole system is robust.The rest part of this paper investigates some factors' impact on the algorithm such as period and density of path point, as well as speed of convergence and quality of adaption for talked method in civil aviation field.
