Research On The Characteristics Of The Evolution Process, The Current Situation And The Optimization Strategy Of Wuhan Industrial Space Since 1990

As the approach of new economic era, the development of China's economy turning into “New Normality”, the national strategy bringing new opportunities, and Wuhan is trying hard to build national central city, the paper chooses Wuhan as the research object and focuses on the metropolitan development area of the city, conducts a research on the evolution process, present features and optimization strategy of the industrial space. Based on the correlation theories of economic geography, three methods which are a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, systematic generalization, and comparative analysis are used in the paper. The author makes an attempt to precisely describe the evolution process, the present features of the industrial space, the driving force which promotes the spatial evolution, the characteristics and issues of the present distribution of industry, the competitive power and the future development trend of Wuhan's industry, and tries to put forward correlative strategies to optimize the spatial arrangement of Wuhan's industry.The discussion process of the paper can be divided into four parts.The first part is Chapter 3. It makes a retrospective study of the characteristics and issues of the evolutionary process of Wuhan industrial space. The paper reviews the new changes which appeared during the development of Wuhan's industry since 1990. The research shows that: the spatial form, the land-use scale, the center-of –gravity shift, the spatial evolutionary phase are four aspects which reflects the overall structure change of industrial space; four dimensions include time variation, center-of –gravity vibration, the change of circle layer and direction can present the features of the industrial spatial extension; the evolution of the industrial space is driven by urban development, economic development, traffic construction and administrative power; and finally, the main problems during the course of industrial space evolution is a lack of intension, the axial spread, a deficiency of industry collaboration, and so on.The second part is Chapter 4. It analyzes and makes a conclusion of the present features and problems of the spatial layout of Wuhan industrial space. The research finds that: the present characteristics of Wuhan industrial space can be reflected by four types of objects such as industrial land, value of gross output, industrial sectors, and industrial enterprise; the main characteristics of the present layout of industrial space are an uneven distribution of industrial land, a high agglomeration degree of the space output, the disparity of industrial distribution, the scale economy prefers economic development zones; the major problems are a low level of city and industry integration in new cities, potential advantaged industries need to be found, the agglomeration of land should be strengthened, the north part of the city is less development, the number of large-scale enterprise is small,and so on.The third part is Chapter 5. It estimates the development phase and competitiveness of Wuhan's industry. The study reveals that: Wuhan now is in the stage of mid-and postindustrialization, the city is in the lead of other cities in central China but still falls behind the five national central city; the industrial competitiveness of Wuhan is plain, but it still has great development potential, the development tendency of manufacturing industries home and abroad is the increasing competition, and the competitive field is raising to a high level; and, now the development tendency of Wuhan's industry is to promote the development of industry and services at the same time, to accelerate the fusion of industrialization and informatization, to upgrade the traditional industries and to exploit rising industries.The fourth part is Chapter 6. It analyzes and summarizes the strategies to optimize the layout of Wuhan industrial space. The research indicates that: for the general pattern, the layout of layers should be further optimized, a core which promotes the development and a more intensive land use need to be taken into account; for the current industrial land, it is important to carry out a secondary development while taking different strategies towards the major city and the outer-ring zones; and for the newly increased industrial land, it is vital to plan ahead, to make the executor clear and to pull cities in the urban circle to develop at the same pace.Taking Wuhan as a representative, the paper discusses the evolvement rule and optimizing strategy of industrial space in big cities in China. It is recommended that the future research can focus on the topics like the mechanism of action of the power of the government and the power of the market in the industrial spatial evolution, the layout pattern and optimizing strategy of industrial space in big cities at home and abroad, the development tendency of industrial space in the background of the fusion of informatization and industrialization.
