Rapid urban development drives the urbanization in our country, and the construction of the high density takes up the urban public space.The fact of gradually aging makes people pay more attention to leisure life of the elderly. With the progress of economy, the improvement of material life, and the promotion of national fitness campaign, the elderly people to seek group activities – ?Square Dance? which is a suitable for themselves and be able to infect others. ?Square dance? has swept the country, and it is not limited in elderly population in the age span. Public response to the ?square dance? and the people involved in the ?square dance? are not identical, and a time to become the focus of public opinion.Then, by means of such special groups looking for place in the urban space, so it is the point of concern in the urban public space and activities to study the correlation between urban public space and specific activity groups.The thesis researches ?square dance? through field researching, case study, comparative study and environmental psychology theory as a secondary research. Firstly, to seek three types of ?square dance? activity space according to generalizing the 28 sites of ?square dance? in the sections of Luoyu Road, the east of Wuluo Road and Zhongnan Road in Wuhan. And Through the interpretation of each typical case of types, we can find another city public space with taking up the space occasionally. Then this thesis made a comparative study among the three sites. There are similarities in the open field, activity time and gathering while there are many differences in specific space, activity personnel and activities. Final the thesis points out the significance that inspiring space energy, enriching public life, establishing conversational society and increasing pressure of capacity of the ?square dance? activity to city. To interpret ?square dance? through focusing on special groups, rethinking the public space, and valuing social interaction by ?square dance?. Meanwhile, professionals should focus more spontaneous collective activities of significance to urban development and construction.
