With the development of smart grid, smart grid optical fiber communication technology towards higher speed, larger capacity and longer distance to development is an inevitable trend, fiber attenuation, dispersion, polarization mode dispersion and nonlinear effect brought about by a series of negative issues become more and more serious affect the fiber channel characteristics. Error control coding forward error correction(FEC) technology in the application of optical communication system has been recognized by various sectors, the existing FEC technology has been difficult to meet the needs of smart grid optical fiber communication development, with stronger error correcting capability and higher coding gain FEC has become a hot topic of current research.Based on smart grid optical fiber communication system, this paper expounds the smart grid technology related to optical fiber communication system, on the basis of detailed analysis of the limited factors of optical fiber transmission and noise characteristics of fiber channel, establishes the coding channel model of optical fiber communication. Then introduces the theory of error control coding and each error control method of the practical application environment and system adaptability in detail, Research and analysis the FEC technology in optical fiber communication and the encoding and decoding principle of FEC error correction codes, and also calculation and simulation analysis of the error correction performance of FEC error correction codes in optical fiber communication.Aimed at the smart grid optical fiber communication demands for the high coding gain and the super error correction performance FEC scheme, We propose a new RS(255,239)+BCH(2232,2040) cascade FEC scheme. Through the simulation analysis, the RS(255,239)+BCH(2232,2040) concatenated FEC scheme compared with the standard of RS(255,239) FEC scheme, its redundancy is only 16.74%, In BER=10E-12, the net coding gain increased by approximately 2.8~3.2dB, because of its excellent error correction capability, It not only ensures the reliability of optical fiber communication, but also extends the distance of optical fiber communication, and the encoding and decoding is simple, easy to hardware. This new type of FEC scheme with good performance of error correction and high coding gain, which can be used as a candidate FEC scheme in the smart grid optical fiber communication system to meet the requirement of the growing optical fiber communication.
