With the risingdemand of new energy, as one kind of the new energy vehicles, pure electric vehicles(PEVs) which areenergy-savingand environmentalhave been the focus of the researchers from all over the world. In the electric power system for PEVs, thermal design is very impotent, local overheating problems of the electric power system for PEV often occur which make the power devices brokenby heatfatigue.A water cooling system of the electric power system for pure electric vehicles was developed to solve the problem of power module local overheating in this paper. The power losses of the power modules were calculated, and then the test bench was built to verify the overall heat capacity of a water cooling plate. The Experimental data were set as boundary conditions of simulation based on the method of numerical heat transfer to optimize the water cooling plate. Three-dimensional model of a cold plate and power modules for a motor controller was built, and the temperature field of the cold plate and the power modules were analyzed by using the engineering software of numerical heat transfer based on the method of finite volume method(FVM).The engineering software, Fluent, simulation shows the temperature distribution of the power module cooling plate;the causes of overheating of the power module were discussed. According to the simulation results we improve the structure of the cold plate. FVM simulationresults show that the problem of the power module overheating was solved by using improved the structure of the cold plate. And the overall temperature rising of the power module is also reduced, which provide a strong guarantee of the stability and the lifetime of the motor controller. This also provides a design basis for the follow-up corrective of electric vehicles.
